Colombia appears poised to become a big producer of ethanol from sugarcane, but according to a recent USDA report, it is unlikely to have much surplus to export any time soon. It is clear the country is on its way to joining the club of major ethanol producers. The industry began production only three years ago, and two year's ago, Colombia's daily ethanol production was just 277,000 gallons. According to USDA, proposed expansion projects currently under consideration have the potential to more than triple that output to nearly 1 million gallons per day in 2010.
