Multinacional le apuesta a un sistema multimodal en el Río Las 19 barcazas que navegarán por el Río Magdalena llegaron en este buque a la bahía de Cartagena. La compañía Impala Warehousing and Logistics International B.V., subsidiaria de la multinacional suiza Trafigura, desarrollará un nuevo sistema multimodal de transporte para Colombia, con una inversión de US$27 millones. El proyecto anunciado permitirá transportar carbón y otras materias primas de forma más fácil, segura y eficiente en las aguas del Río Magdalena. Con una flota de 19 barcazas y un remolcador, Impala busca promover la navegación en la principal ruta fluvial de Colombia y fortalecer la habilidad del país para exportar materias primas claves a mercados internacionales. Cada una de las barcazas de Impala mide 60 metros y tiene una capacidad de 2.500 toneladas métricas. La capacidad total de la flota son 47.000 toneladas métricas. Todas las barcazas tienen doble fondo para promover la seguridad y la protección del medio ambiente. Las barcazas operarán inicialmente desde Barranquilla y el puerto de Barrancabermeja, localizado en las riberas del Río Magdalena, y se espera que estén en operación a mediados de mayo de este año. Como parte de la flota, también llegará a Cartagena un remolcador de 3,5hp para navegar las barcazas río abajo y río arriba. El remolcador está equipado con modernos instrumentos de navegación y nueve timones de dirección, los cuales mejoran significativamente la navegabilidad de los convoyes. “El rol de Impala en la creación de una cadena logística multimodal, en tiempos en los que hay gran interés por reducir los costos logísticos en Colombia, demuestra nuestra confianza en las ventajas competitivas que el Río Magdalena tiene por encima otros formas de transporte”, dijo Alejandro Costa, gerente General de Impala en Colombia. Por su parte, Augusto García, director de Cormagdalena expresó que: “la inversión de Impala representa un voto de confianza en el potencial del Río y un compromiso a largo plazo con Colombia”.
