Colombia cuenta con 6,8 miles de millones de barriles en recursos de petróleo técnicamente en sus cuencas no convencionales tales como el Valle Medio de Magdalena, Llanos y Catatumbo, mientras que Parnaíba, Sao Francisco y las cuencas costeras de Espírito Santo y Campos en Brasil y la cuenca de Chaco-Paraná en Paraguay muestran valores de 245 y 75 trillones de pies cúbicos de gas shale técnicamente recuperable respectivamente.
