Augmented reality game market growth might be stalling

The growth of mobile AR game revenue has stopped. It decreased marginally last year, and this year it is expected to decline by 20 percent, approaching 2019 levels, which provided an explanation in his revised projection and pointed out that Square Enix's Dragon Quest Walk had a revenue decline of 32% year over year in the first quarter of 2022 and that Pokémon Go's income appeared to have fallen by 45% in 2022." AR gaming business estimates that the market is currently on course to generate $2.5 billion in revenue by 2026, down from the expected $6.7 billion.

Second, compared to standard mobile games, AR games are much less likely to contain in-game advertising. Learning how to include advertisements in these kinds of games might be a powerful income source that changes the way the market functions as a whole. It is sad that the Pokémon Go concept did not serve as a launchpad for further games in the same genre, instead elevating the title, But it also emphasizes how the Pokémon name elevated the game's design. The pre-existing popularity and commercial interest in Pokémon are important, but there is also a positive overlap with the illusion that the game is selling.

Since the beginning of the franchise's marketing in 1996, the idea of becoming a Pokémon trainer in the real world has been a popular theme. Since the very first game, randomized monster encounters, trainer conflicts, and control over gyms have all been essential features. It's a tough industry to get into; maybe Niantic (who just debuted its AR game social media network Campfire) and other companies can come up with fresh uses for AR technology to expand the market's customer base.

It does appear that the AR games market isn't able to sustain more than one "super hit" like Pokémon Go, Escofet said, though that doesn't mean there still won't be growth in the industry's future. "There are enough compelling mobile AR gaming use cases, and there is enough impetus from leading platforms such as Apple, Google, Meta, Tencent, Unity and Unreal to ensure continued growth going forward," he wrote. "Albeit at a significantly slower pace than previously forecast."
