For all fare classes, except basic economy, you will be able to easily pick your seat or modify your seat assignment. But if you have a basic economy ticket, you are able to buy seat assignments during United Airlines seat reservations and up until check-in opens.  

In order to select a seat or change a seat, you have to go through the official United Airlines website or the mobile application. If you are not given a seat assignment, you can check closer to the time of departure to see if additional seats have become available. Moreover, you can also contact a United representative if you want to know more about the seat reservation policy. However, if for any reason you are unable to get in touch with them, you still have the option of hiring a personal assistant. To do this, visit the Flying Rules website and contact their travel agent or dial 1-800-865-1848.
