Wavy and curly hair differ primarily in shape, texture, and the way each reacts to styling and humidity. Wavy hair falls between straight and curly—it forms loose “S” shaped waves and typically lies closer to the scalp. It ranges from barely-there bends (Type 2A) to more defined waves (Type 2C). Wavy hair manages to have less volume than curly hair and can be inclined to frizz, especially in humid conditions.
Curly hair, on the other hand, has more defined spirals or ringlets and doesn’t lay flat. It ranges from loose loops (Type 3A) to tighter corkscrews (Type 3C). Curly hair usually has more volume and bounce but also needs more moisture to avoid dryness and frizz.
The key difference lies in the curl pattern: wavy hair is more elongated with softer curves, while curly hair has a tighter, springier coil. Each type needs tailored care—lighter products for wavy hair to avoid weighing it down and richer, more hydrating products for curly hair to keep the curls defined and healthy.
